Age 79, of Michigan Center, passed away Friday, February 16, 2018. Born January 20, 1939 to George Carrol and Georgia M. Loomis, she was raised a truly tough “farmer’s daughter.” She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl “Butch” Rice; grandson, Ryan Rice; and siblings, Melvin Loomis and Betty Shimkus. Irene is survived by her three sons, Carl (Penny) Rice Jr. of Jackson, Tim (Florence) Rice of Leslie and Terry Rice of Jackson; two grandsons, B.J. and Kyle Rice; sister, Nina Gibbs; uncle, Leyland Loomis; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was a 1957 graduate of Vandercook Lake High School where she played french horn in the band and was the drum majorette. Irene was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan; an avid bowler, she was the Guys and Dolls League secretary for many years. Irene enjoyed many hobbies which included, card parties; dance club; dancing to 50’s music, especially Elvis; trips to the casino; lake activities including swimming, boating and skiing; gardening, which included tending to many a family members cemetery plots. She truly enjoyed time with her family and had a special place in her life for her “granddogs” as well. A Celebration of Irene’s Life will be held at St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church, 361 E. Grove St., Michigan Center on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 1:00 pm with visitation beginning at 11:00 am. Interment will take place at Woodland Cemetery.
