Age 86, of Leoni Township, passed away at the Summit Township Jacqueline House Assisted Living, February 1, 2020 under the loving care of his family and the assistance of Henry Ford Allegiance Hospice. He is survived by three children; Debra Mizerik of Horton, Michigan, Robert (Lynette) Channell of Jackson, Michigan and Wendy (Jim) Vandenburgh of Michigan Center, MI, seven grandchildren; Lindsay (David) Tebo, Steve (Kelly) Mizerik, Lauren (Paul) Boynton, Jamie and Richard Vandenburgh, Brandon and Jacob Channell, six great-grandchildren and his sister; Nancy (Sue) Moody. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Patricia (Schied) Channell in 2005, his son-in-law; Larry Mizerik, his mother and step-father; Vivian and Charles Grennan, brother; James Channell and his granddaughter; Bailey Channell. Lew served the nation in the US Navy during the Korean War then went on to work as a Systems Technician with the Michigan Bell Telephone (eventually ATT). After retirement he pursued a successful career working independently as a consultant and installer for twenty years. He was active as a Union Steward with the Communication Workers of America Union and took great pride in their achievements. He had a passion and appreciation for continuing education in the ever changing high tech communications field which allowed him to be so successful in his own firm after retirement from the telephone company. He was an avid sports fan and worked to maintain his personal physical fitness with exercising in diverse pastimes including paddleball, hockey, golf, tennis and running and was one of the original members of the Men’s Slow-Puck Hockey League with the Jackson Area Hockey Association. Earlier in life he coached his son in Baseball and Hockey. He was known by close family and friends as “Sweet Lew” from his easy nature and charming smile and will be missed by many. Mr. Channell has been cremated. A Celebration of his Life will be held at Arthur-Day Funeral Home Sunday, February 9, 2020 at 10:30 am with Hospice Chaplain Greg Grotbeck officiating, with Veterans Honors by the Jackson County American Legion Ritual Team. Visitation prior, at 9:30 am. A time of fellowship and refreshment will immediately follow at the Beach Bar, Clark Lake. Those who wish may make a contribution to the Henry Ford Allegiance Hospice in Lew’s memory.
