Lawrence L. Bullen

October 2, 1929 ~ April 4, 2022 (age 92)


At the age of 92, Larry passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 4, 2022 at his residence in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  He was the loving husband of Valerie Lemper Bullen who preceded him in death in 2019. He was the son of G. Rexford and Gladys Bullen, and brother of Eunice Washbish and Margaret Ware who also preceded him in death.  Loving father of Charlie Bullen (Lynne) of Phoenix, AZ, John Bullen of Ann Arbor, MI, Martha Bullen Muhich (Tony) of Grosse Pointe Park, MI and Tom Bullen (Marylou) of Folsom, CA.  He is also survived by eight adoring grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, all of whom he was so proud of.

Larry was a lifelong resident of Jackson, Michigan where he practiced law for more than 60 years.  He is the product of the Jackson Public Schools (1947), Jackson Junior College (1949), The University of Michigan (1951) and The University of Michigan Law School (1954).  After graduation from Law School, he served in the US Army the bulk of which was spent in the Army of Occupation and later NATO Service in Germany.  He returned to Jackson in 1956 where his practice of law helped countless members of the community.  During his final years of practice, he devoted much his time to the management of the Weatherwax Foundation, Jackson’s largest private grant making foundation.

Larry served on countless boards, donating time and wisdom to many charities. He was especially active supporting arts, education, health care and religious groups.  He has served as Treasurer of the Board of WA Foote Memorial Hospital, Chairman of the Jackson Hospital Finance Authority, President of Family service of Jackson, President of Family Service & Children’s Aid of Jackson, Director and Treasurer of the Jackson Community College Foundation, served on the boards of Beth Moser Mental Health Clinic, Hospice of Jackson, the Jackson Symphony Orchestra Association, and the YMCA Trust Fund. He served St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on the Vestry as Junior and Senior Warden of the parish.

The First Director Emeritus of the Jackson Community College Foundation (2007)

Jackson Community College’s Distinguished Service Award (2010)

Jackson Citizen of the Year (2017)

He will be missed by the community, his many friends and especially by his family, all of whom should take comfort in his lasting impact on their lives.

A memorial service will take place later in the spring the details of which are pending. In lieu of flowers, his family asks that donations be made in his name to your favorite local charity.
