Age 87, of Sandstone Township, passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Arbor Hospice. He is survived by his wife of 62 years; Virginia ‘Ginny’ (maiden-Hilliker) McCourtie, three children; Lorie (Rick) Tripp, Kevin (Sheila) McCourtie and Don (Jerri) McCourtie, ten grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, two brothers; Ed (Julie) McCourtie and Stephen (Driscilla) McCourtie, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter; Cheryl McCourtie, brother; Dick McCourtie, grandchildren; Elgin Rose and Jenny Woodard-Wicht, his parents; AJ and Isabel (maiden-Hills) McCourtie. He attended Michigan Center High School and graduated with the class of 1950. He attended Ferris Institute College for two years. Jack served the nation in the US Army, retired from TRW (Kelsey-Hayes) and early in life he was a fireman for the New York Central Railroad. He enjoyed motorcycles and was a NASCAR fan. He attended Jackson Community College for ground school and earned his private pilot and seaplane license in 1979. He raced 54 years in several classes of outboard boats as a member of the American Power Boat Association and won several state and national championships which resulted with him being inducted into the Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Fame. Services will be held at the New Horizons Community Church (4300 Lansing Ave., Jackson, MI 49201) on Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at 11 am with Pastor Jerry Lyon officiating. Interment Fifield Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 am until service time. His military service will be honored by the Jackson County American Legion Ritual Team and the U.S. Military Vets Motorcycle Club.
